Main available SW tools and HW equipments:

In the ARTS Laboratory about 20 multimedia workstations are available, together with some work benches where test-beds and prototypes are assembled and several laptops and portable terminals. All workstations and other types of terminals are equipped with both Linux and Windows XP operative systems. All workstations are connected to the Internet and can access to the Digital Libraries and data repositories of the University. Several software tools for network simulation are available; both developed by ARTS people and available from the market. All workstations are equipped with SW development tools and some of them are specifically devoted and dimensioned to host specific measurement, planning, and performance evaluation tools for wired/wireless networks.
Together with general purpose tools and equipments, also specific equipments are available. Some of them are briefly described:
  • development toolkit for wireless sensor networks thought for MOTEz sensors based on Zig-Bee technology and TinyOS operative system.
  • development and evaluation toolkit for wireless MESH networks obtained by Microsoft Research (Mesh toolkit). It implements Microsoft MCL (Mesh Connectivity Layer) protocol plus some analysis tools to monitor the performance of the developed MESH network.
  • a further set of MESH related equipments made up of 15 routers developed by Locust World, Linux based, and implementing AODV routing protocol.
  • several RFID toolkits based on both passive and active Tag technology. Toolkits include quite a number of Tags operating at different frequencies and some readers ranging from PCMCIA cards to reader stations able of handling different remote antennas.
  • terminals and "open" network interfaces to access to several wireless systems (GRPS, HSPDA, UMTS, DVB-S, DVB-RCS) which allow to implement wireless gateways and test-beds including heterogeneous network segments.
  • a differential GPS system allowing to localize outdoor with a precision of 10cm
  • two satellite links and relevant satellite stations operating at the Ka band with DVB-RCS (Skyplexnet) standard and at the Ku band with DVB-S standard respectively. These stations are nodes of a national geographical satellite network connecting all research Units of the CNIT consortium.
